What is Oil Pulling and Oil Pulling Benefits

If you have never heard of oil pulling, you are about to get really skeptical of me. But just follow along.

What is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling is basically using oil as mouthwash and swishing. The most ancient forms (it’s a very, very old practice) use sesame oil. However, I don’t like the taste. I use coconut oil. Get a good quality oil. Find it here.

It is recommended to oil pull when you first wake up. Before brushing your teeth, before coffee, before water and on an empty stomach. I have found 2 reasons to oil pull on an empty stomach:

  • Because it makes most people nauseous to do it after eating
  • Your mouth produces digestive enzymes after you eat. Oil pulling removes those enzymes. BUT……your stomach also produces digestive enzymes. So as long as you aren’t oil pulling every time after you eat, it’s not going to be a problem.

It’s not horrible if you don’t oil pull on an empty stomach, just highly recommended.

  • Get a spoonful of coconut oil and swish for up to 10-20 minutes. I aim for the 10-15 minute mark.
  • Spit out in the trash. Very important not to spit down the sink (it will clog your drain). Also very important not to swallow the oil. It will be very toxic.
  • After 10-20 minutes, spit in the trash, rinse with water, then swish with warm salt water (regular table salt will do). The salt water helps with any irritations caused from the oil pulling. I actually really like the salt water after oil pulling, it’s very soothing.
  • Repeat as often as you want. I oil pull 2-3 times a week.

It is fine if you have to spit out your oil and get a new spoonful during your oil pulling session. I cannot do the full 10-15 minutes on one spoonful. I have to spit it out about every 4-6 minutes and get a new spoonful. It’s just a gag reflex I can’t get past. And I push through this reflex because I see great results.

Oil Pulling Benefits

Results I have experienced:

  • Reduced bloating/water weight. When I first started this, I did do it daily for about 3 weeks. By the end of the first week, my husband asked me if I was loosing weight.
  • Clear skin. When I go a full week without oil pulling, my face breaks out. Every time.
  • A lot less tooth and gum sensitivity. This is GREAT for gum health. So if you have any gum disease, cavities, or oral health problems in general, give this a try.
  • More hydrated. I feel more hydrated. Less thirsty. Even in this hot Texas summer.
  • Whiter teeth.
  • Great hangover cure.

That’s what I have experienced.

Crazy, right?!?! I’ve seen great results. Good luck with it!

Upgrade Your Oil Pulling With Essential Oils

Upgrade your oil pulling with essential oils - thecrunchymoose.com

For an added oral health boost, add essential oils to your oil pulling routine. I only use Young Living essential oils (find out why here). I see added benefits when I add these oils to my coconut oil. My personal favorites are lemon or thieves. There are more essential oils that are great for oral health. These are some of the most popular and effective oils.

  • Lemon: Whitens teeth
  • Peppermint: Freshens breath and fights gingivitis
  • Thieves: Great for oral health; attacks bleeding gums, gingivitis, and oral infections
  • Frankincense: Eases mouth discomfort and supports gum health
  • Melaleuca Alternifolia: Also known as tea tree; Attacks gingivitis and canker sores
  • Oregano: Oral infection control

Add 1 drop of essential oil of your choice to your coconut oil. If the taste is too strong, you can dilute it. Add 1-3 drops of essential oil to 3-6 tablespoons of coconut oil. Store in a small glass container and use as needed.

After I oil pull, I drink my morning detox drink.

“It will be toxic because you are pulling toxins out of your body. It is a crazy detox that works”

NOPE. And then you follow that up by saying you can’t explain the science behind it. It’s not because you’re not a scientist; it’s because there is no science behind it.

I’d love to try this. I have a question about the Coconut oil I recently purchased. I put it in the cabinet and over the following few days, it turned to liquid. Is that normal? I bought it to add to my dogs food, to help him with dry skin.

  4. Ashlee Mayer says

    August 31, 2013 at 3:23 pm

Awesome idea for your dogs! Love it. Let me know if it helps their skin.

Yep! Coconut oil changes consistency based on the temperature. Currently, mine is liquid also. I keep a container in my bathroom cabinet and in my kitchen pantry. Both are liquid. In the winter they are solid. It’s usually solid in the store even in the summer because store temperatures are usually colder than your pantry. If you want it to be solid, you can keep it in the fridge. I actually prefer liquid because it’s easier to spoon out what I need.

This. Claiming that swishing oil in your mouth will help with AIDS and every other ailment known to man is batpoop crazy.

Anecdotes are not evidence. But, I did this twice a day for about a month and I did notice that my teeth got a little whiter. Just kidding, not even that happened.

I read about the benefits of oil pulling after going to the dentist and being diagnosed with a number of cavities he could have ONLY came up with if it were some kind of scam… but I do have one or two dark spots on my teeth. I decided I didn’t want to have to rely on a dentist and that oil pulling can help heal cavities. I have read that many people get results as well. I tried it for 30 days straight and it did make my mouth feel super awesome (cures morning breath!) but aside from that I personally haven’t noticed any results. This doesn’t mean it doesn’t work, some people may just be more sensitive to results or it can take a while.

Regardless, I think it’s great to spread the word that there may be alternatives to mouth, tooth and body health. I still oil pull a few times a week as well. Thanks for sharing!

Anya from La Healthy Living oil pulled while pregnant. She said she is happy to answer any questions on it. http://www.lahealthyliving.com/1/post/2013/01/coconut-oil-for-your-dental-health.html. Cosign! As someone who has worked in public health (as a researcher in long term health conditions) I can tell you that THIS WILL HAVE NO EFFECT ON ANY OF THE NAMED CONDITIONS WHATSOEVER! (caps for emphasis). Your body is NOT naturally ”toxic” and in need of ”cleansing”. It does that under its own power. These kinds of practices are hocus pocus spoon bending weirdness. It is irresponsible to be promoting these kinds of therapies via your blog.

Just to be clear: I didn’t work for a pharmaceutical, I worked for a government health organisation whose mission is to reduce the incidence of long term health conditions via public education in regards to healthy eating, exercise and proactive health action.

I’m a firm believer that coconut oil is one heck of a natural remedy for many many ailments…in animals and humans. I suffer from keratosis pilaris, a bumpy acne like condition on my arms. Coconut oil clears this up within 3 days and enables me to wear tank tops with confidence in blistering hot Texas. Thank heavens! LOL I’ve been oil pulling for a month now, 2-3 times a week and I’ve noticed some changes I’m quite happy with. I’ve lost 6 pounds without adding any extra time to my workouts. My face is clear any my skin feels moisturized ( But I do use it as lotion after a shower) and my gums and teeth are a lot healthier feeling and looking. I support the use of coconut oil as a natural remedy and it’s science is backed by Dr. Oz….who I have a ton more respect for than anyone who works for the government! I support a regular diet, exercise and healthy living agenda, but you can’t knock the benefits of coconut oil because it doesn’t fit into what your job says you can teach.

Right. Please provide information about these amazing people that have had their AIDS, cancer, diabetes, and polio helped by oil pulling. The only legitimate issue on your list that oil could help would be cracked heels- and believe me, I burst out laughing when I saw this on your list wedged in among chronic and serious diseases and medical concerns- and that’s by rubbing the oil on your feet, not by swishing it around in your mouth.

  25. Louise says

Actually you see better results in skin conditions by changing what you put into your body rather than what you put on it. Oil pulling allows the body to absorb the nutrients of the coconut oil whilst also drawing out impurities. It helps to rebalance the body by helping to support the bacterial environment. Especially in the mouth- which is paramount. I think it is a great article and personally have seen many benefits from oil pulling. I certainly don’t need scientific research to help me make my decisions especially if something is natural, immune and nutrient boosting, cheap, easy and effective. However there is plenty of research out there to corroborate the claims in this post- I just dont need to be spoon fed I can go look if I am interested.

Actually, our body is full of toxins. If our body could get rid of toxins naturally, there wouldn’t be diseases and disorders.

Why does there always have to be party poopers that rain on other people’s parades? If you don’t like something, don’t try it. There is NOTHING harmful in putting a little oil in your mouth and swishing it around. Nothing!

I think you forgot to read the part where it says can “help” with allergies, not cure allergies. Also, as someone who works in the dental field, coconut oil can help heal the gums. People with aids often have sore, swollen, red gums due to their disease-it’s entirely possible that coconut oil could HELP relieve this problem, not cure their condition. And quit attacking the writer for sharing information. There’s nothing wrong with searching for holistic ways to heal the body. Would you attack a doctor for prescribing a medication with ungodly side affects (as is done everyday!)? No, you wouldn’t.

Hospitals medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the United States. Preventable. As high as 400,000 deaths a year, according to a new study in the Journal of Patient Safety. Maybe more time should be spent making sure the right amount of toxic, overpriced drugs are being administered than worrying about someone oil pulling. In 2009 a study published in the Indian Journal of Dental Research reported that, “oil pulling therapy showed a reduction in the plaque index, modified gingival scores, and total colony count of aerobic microorganisms in the plaque of adolescents with plaque-induced gingivitis.” “Bacteria in the mouth gets into the blood stream through infectious gums and oil pulling reduced the amount of this bacteria.” Of course oil pulling may sound as crazy as someone saying flossing your teeth can reduce heart attacks but that has proven to be true. As for coconut oil you will never see ANY doctor bring up success people have had treating Parkinson’s or Alzheimers with it. Or that coconut oil is converted by the body into “Monolaurin” a fatty acid with anti-viral properties that might be useful in the treatment of AIDS.http://coconutoil.com/hiv/

I think some people will attack based on fear and lack of knowledge. The great thing is that just because you read it, and someone else is doing it, that in itself will not obligate you to do the same. So, if someone wishes to do it..more power to you. If someone decides its bullcrap..then move on and let others be. I started today and will at least give it 1 month. If I decide then to stop, so be it. If I decide to continue, I intend to share what I have learned. Great article and I thank you for sharing your experience.

I use sesame oil in the morning, and coconut oil at night before going to bed. I noticed within a few days that my chronic sinus and congestion problems had dissipated. I continued to do this several times friday night and 2 times saturday. By saturday night all the swelling in my gums around my tooth was gone. No more pain. I continued to swish on sunday too. I went to the dentist first going monday morning and no abscess at all. I was able to have my tooth repaired and no antibotics. I firmly believe this saved me!! You are BRAINWASHED by your MD degree and we all know after years of research that you are all owned by the Great and Powerful PHARMA. We don’t have to prove anything. We know that alternative modalities work and more and more people are waking up to your poisonous way of treating disease which only causes more problems in the long run. I call it the Betty Crocker Recipe, everybody that walks through your doors gets the same recipe. If you really cared about patients you would try to find other ways to help them besides just taking your pen out and writing a Rx for that patient. My goodness don’t you know these precious people are looking to you for help and they trust what ever you say. This is what is wrong with the medical system in our country. You can’t go to the Dr and have a little higher blood pressure than you would have at home that you don’t suggest a pill for it or maybe even two pills! I would hate to be in your shoes! I couldn’t sleep at night knowing all the poisons that I was passing out to these precious patients. You need to read and study your HIPPOCRATIC oath that you took when you took on the name MD, or maybe they don’t even take that oath anymore. It wouldn’t surprise me, everything else is changing in our world. MD just gives you legal permission to kill! If you don’t like Alternative ways then just stay from it just stay in your own little protected PHARMA world and keep giving out the poisons! Just leave us alone!!!!!!!!

I’ve tried it twice so far (can only last 5 minutes so far, but I’m trying work my way up) and I really liked how clean it made my mouth feel and I could even tell a difference in the whiteness of my teeth.
But I didn’t do it on an empty stomach either time and I’m just wondering what happens if you do it during the middle of the day when you have eaten?

Hi Alima! Glad you are already seeing positive results. There are 2 main reasons that you it should be done on an empty stomach. #1. It has to do with important digestive enzymes in food & that your mouth produces. If you oil pull soon after eating, you spit out the enzymes that are needed to properly digest food. It doesn’t have to be done first thing in the morning, but it’s best if you wait at least a couple hours after eating. But I have read many, many reviews of people doing it after eating and seeing positive results. So unless you did it every time after you ate, it probably isn’t a big problem. Especially since your stomach also produces digestive enzymes. #2. Some people get nauseous when oil pulling on a full stomach.

That is true. The government is chuck full of liars. But I have to agree with what Dr. M says concerning natural remedies too. Why? Because I have some experience in this area. Excuse me for a moment while I wipe away some hot tears and blow my nose. That’s better. And now please let me explain. My beautiful mother got sucked into this stuff while suffering from breast cancer. She died a very SLOW and very PAINFUL death from a type of breast cancer that has a 95% cure rate on conventional medicine, so her hospice Dr. told me and he wasn’t even an oncologist. The oncologist who first saw her at stage 4 was very angry that my mom waited so long, until it was inoperable. That means if she had sought help sooner, she would still be here. I know. Shocking isn’t it? But instead of going that route, she tried every crack pot home cure under the very sun holistic shamans both loath and worship. Do I sound bitter, or angry? Well I’m not. The truth just sounds harsh to most people. All I can say is that I experienced this terrifying scenario in real life At first, I was very hopeful and supportive. Two years after many failed cancer cures, not so much. I read research for hours and hours trying to learn what I could and apply what I learned. But now I have no mother! She’s gone! So please tell me that you aren’t saying that oil pulling could have saved her life? If you believe that, then I have some ocean front property on Mars to sell you real cheap. I am a real person who has suffered a real and tragic loss at the hand of quackery such as this. Every one knows the power of suggestion, “the placebo effect” if you will, and it is VERY powerful. But so is cancer. It doesn’t read, and it doesn’t have faith. It just kills. Did you know that some women who are diagnosed with cancer don’t really have it? Then they go on these miracle natural cures and what do you know? Their “cancer” is gone! But what about the women who really DO have cancer and try these gimmicks? They die. Slowly. Painfully. And so I have to say from experience that it is harmful to lure seriously sick people with serious life threatening illnesses into thinking these methods alone have a snowballs chance in hell at curing them. Well, thankfully this story has a happy ending. You see, I know that my mom is in heaven. And thanks to what Jesus suffered on the cross, I have the assurance of knowing I will see her again. You and many others may think that is a lot of hog wash. Well dear lady, it is a great comfort to me, and only time will tell. Anyway, while I believe we should live as healthy a life as we can AFFORD, I also believe that no one should make promises they can’t keep, or substantiate concerning terminal illnesses. If anything I’ve learned through this ordeal is that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And trust the Lord for what you can’t do in your own power. = )

Although I have noticed my whole mouth is general feels and looks amazing since I started, my gums are pinker and my teeth just look brighter! I also suffer from migraines and have for several years.. actually just last night I had one, and I though I should oil pull. Well it wasn’t going away, It was a migraine that was going on its 2nd day.. and today I woke up after oil pulling last night and no migraine. I believe oil pulling works wonders!!!! I recommend it to everyone I work with and they all love it! Great blog, keep spreading the word!

I would like to try oil pulling, but I have one question and I’ve not received an answer from anyone. Maybe you can help! Is it required to use a good brand of coconut oil for this, or since I will be spitting it out would it be alright to use a cheaper brand, like the one sold at Mega Grocery Stores? I’m on a very limited budget due to to serious health problems and numerous unsuccessful surgeries, so I can only buy good coconut oil as a special treat for my family, which I try to do as often as possible since we all love it!

You will see better results with a raw, unrefined coconut oil. And sometimes you will run across a raw, unrefined coconut oil at the megastores for a great deal. Some of them are perfectly fine oils. The best deal I have seen on coconut oil is Vitacost’s store brand. http://bit.ly/15Y6beb It’s currently $22 for the big 54 oz.

I posted my question on several blogs that had written about oil pulling, and you are the only person to take the time to write back. I really appreciate that! Now I can get started!

Olive oil does work. Coconut, sunflower, & sesame are the most commonly used. I’ve read reviews that olive oil can leave a yellow film on your teeth. But I haven’t tried oil pulling with coconut oil, so I can’t deny or confirm that.

My experience with coconut oil (having had acne and obscenely oily skin since I was 12, I’m now 26) I have been using it as a face wash for a year and in the last 8 months I have not had one pimple show up. My skin is clear, smooth supple, and NOT OILY! I actually can go to the grocery store with minimal make-up now because I am no longer ashamed of the appearance of my skin. Keep in mind, I have tried prescription pills, proactive, acids of all different percentages, creams, toners, masks, even egg yolks – I was super skeptical of using oil on already oily skin but I am SO glad I did!

Since the success of using on my face, I started using it in my hair in place of Moroccan oil and I made a body lotion for after the shower.

Given the positive results I’ve experienced with coconut oil to this day, what’s stopping me from putting a tablespoon in my mouth every now and then? (besides the fact I have to go to the store to buy more cause I’m always running out cause I LOVE THIS STUFF)!

Hi Caitlin! Yes, eating coconut oil is VERY beneficial & I eat a lot of coconut oil. But when you oil pull, don’t swallow the oil you swish with. So you’ll swish the oil for 10-20 minutes, then spit it out. Don’t swallow that oil. hope that clears up the confusion 😉

I just have to say that DOCTORS and MEDICINE killed MY precious Mother!
AND my best friend had stage 4 breast cancer that came back in her back bone after 6 years of being clear!
I am sorry about your Mom but had she gone through all of the terrible things that chemo and radiation treatments do to your body, she still may have died!! My friends immune system is awful due to modern drugs she has taken to kill the cancer!
She started using essential oils and she feels amazing! She is dropping sacred frankincense under her tongue everyday, diffusing oils and rubbing them on her feet. She went for her scan a few weeks ago and the tumor in her spine could no longer be seen! PRAISE THE LORD!!
I am in no way claiming that oils healed her, but I am saying that God gave us all of the plants for a reason!! My great Grandmother was a Creek Indian and used plants and flowers as medicine.
Oils are mentioned all through the Bible…they were more valuable than gold!! The government and pharmaceutical companies changed all of that!!
Do you not think that in all the years of searching for a cure for cancer, that one hasn’t been found?? There is to much money in the research and treatment, for the cure to ever be revealed!! The government that you speak of will NEVER allow it!! Population control!!
I believe someday soon we will be dependent on the old ways of curing our bodies. If you are a past a certain age, healthcare may not be an option anymore! I saw it when my Mom got sick from medicine a doctor gave her that resulted in her death after fighting for her life for almost 3 months in the hospital. She was a very active intelligent 79 year old woman!! She did not receive aggressive treatment because of her age, even though I told them that until she took the medicine. she was healthy!! I wish I had known more about oils then.
I am in no way being ugly, we all have our opinions…I a just saying Holistic medicine is a more natural way to cleanse and heal our bodies. Oils have no side effects like synthetic drugs do!!
I come from Grandparents and family that most all of them lived to be in their late 90’s and some in their 100’s. They mostly grew their own food, took very little synthetic medicine, worked hard and loved the Lord !
Like some of the others said…if you don’t agree, that’s fine…it doesn’t mean you have to criticize or belittle others opinions! Godspeed <3

Interesting. That same govt agency used to say the same thing about cannabis. Then, in 1979 it applied for a patent for cannabis as a neuroprotector and to combat AIDS dementia. Now top research hospitals worldwide are reflecting what our govt knew (but kept hidden) in 1979.

Now NIH and the Cancer Institute even says it kills cancer cells.

Hocus Pocus? I’ll take it any day over what big pharma offers.

I have a concern about oil pulling that has not been talked about anywhere else. I notice that when I’m oil pulling, there is a crease that appears below the lower lip and above the chin. It’s known as a chin crease or mental crease. My concern is that oil pulling will make this horizontal line more pronounced in a similar way one gets crows feet from squinting. What are your thoughts about this?

  95. The Crunchy Moose says

    January 5, 2016 at 1:48 pm

I haven’t heard that before. But I would think that it would be like a laugh line and become more pronounced if you do it often enough – just based on what you are describing.

I am new to the coconut craze, meaning that I just started using it today in my diet. I’m curious about the oil pulling but I’m on a thyroid medicine that I have to take every morning when I wake. I had a mass on the left side of my thyroid so they removed the entire half that it was on even though it was 1.5 centimeters in size. I have to take my prescription first thing in the morning and wait 1 hour before eating and 4 hours before taking any kind of medications. Is it ok to oil pull before I take my thyroid medicine or should I wait 4 hours as I do with medicine ? My thyroid functions as though it is a whole still so the doctors put me on the thyroid medicine to slow it down to help lessen the chances of another mass growing.

I have been oil pulling for about a year. I have seen my teeth get whiter, my gums get tighter, and the best thing that happens is right after I oil pull, my sinus drain like crazy. I haven’t had a sinus infection since doing this, and I used to get them at least once a month. No, it might not cure cancer, but it does have some pretty amazing benefits if you just stay open to the process. One important factor is, try not to “swich” the oil, but rather PULL the oil threw your gums with a little force. I hope people give it a try.
