The benefits of homemade mouthwash go beyond just clean breath and a refreshed feeling. When you make your own mouthwash at home, you have complete control over the ingredients you put into it. This means you can choose natural, safe, and organic ingredients that remineralize and whiten your teeth.
And you can fully customize your recipe to fit your oral care needs. Add ingredients to your mouthwash to clean, freshen, whiten, remineralize, and soothe. Plus, most recipes cost pennies per use!
My Testimony
I used to have sensitive teeth. I used to use a maximum strength sensitive toothpaste. I used to use a numbing gel I got from my dentist everyday. And I STILL had sensitive teeth & gums. And then I started making DIY, nontoxic, homemade toothpaste & mouthwash and started oil pulling.
My sensitive teeth are a thing of the past. Bye bye, Sensodyne!

How to Customize a Remineralizing & Whitening Mouthwash
There are 5 main components to the perfect mouthwash:
- An antiseptic
- A remineralizer
- A whitener
- A pH balancer
- A flavor and / or sweetener
Here are common ingredients for each category. From this list, you'll be able to create your mouthwash nirvana!
Step 1: Choose Your Antiseptic:
An antiseptic is a substance that stops or slows down the growth of microorganisms. The antiseptic not only stops bacteria from growing in your mouth, it keeps your mouthwash shelf stable.
Your antiseptic choices are:
- Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel
- Colloidal Silver
- Learn more health & beauty tips with colloidal silver here
- Food Grade 3% Hydrogen Peroxide:
- May also whiten your teeth
- Learn more about how to safely use hydrogen peroxide for oral health here
- Alcohol / Vodka:
- Note: I see a lot of mouthwash recipes with alcohol / vodka. Alcohol has been shown to be drying and affect saliva levels. Therefore, I don't use alcohol in my mouthwash but I'm including it as an option since many people use it successfully.
Step 2: Choose Your Remineralizer:
Step 3: Choose Your Whitener:
- Food Grade 3% Hydrogen Peroxide:
- Also an antiseptic

- Essential Oils like Citrus Fresh (blend of citrus essential oils and spearmint), Lemon, or Orange
- Turmeric

Step 4: Choose Your pH Balancer:
Acidic pH levels in your mouth can weaken enamel and increase the presence of cavity causing bacteria.
Create a pH balanced mouthwash by adding one of these:
- Baking Soda
- Salt
Step 5: Choose Your Sweetener and / or Flavor
- Liquid Stevia
- Xylitol
- Xylitol has also been shown to provide cavity protection
- Essential Oils:
- My favorites include:
- Peppermint
- Spearmint
- Citrus Fresh (blend of citrus essential oils and spearmint)
- Lemon
- Clove
- Cinnamon
- Thieves (has clove, cinnamon, and lemon in the blend)
- Myrrh & Frankincense (traditionally, myrrh & frankincense resin were chewed as a gum to support oral health)
- Copaiba
- Orange
