Yes, you can get rid of varicose veins naturally! No lasers needed. With the right combo of essential oils, you can promote blood flow and get rid of the blood clots causing varicose veins. Get rid of varicose veins the natural way with this varicose vein attacking body butter.
What are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins, although they can appear anywhere, are most common in our legs. Your legs pump blood against gravity to your heart. If there is added pressure on your legs or the veins, the blood flow slows down, causing build up. The veins then become twisted, large, and weak. And that’s a varicose vein.
What Causes Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins happen when the veins and valves are weakened and/or have extra pressure. A bunch of things could cause this including:
- Gaining weight (including pregnancy)
- Blood clots
- Injury or damage
- Prolonged standing
- Lack of exercise (gotta keep the blood flowing!)
Although I have a few spider veins prior to a back injury, I got 2 large varicose vein patches in my left leg from sciatic nerve damage. I developed this body butter to attack my varicose veins and try to reverse the damage. I have been using this recipe for about 4 months and the discoloration is fading!
How to Prevent Varicose Veins
Of course it’s best to not get varicose veins in the first place! Here are the best ways to prevent varicose veins:
- Use a dry body brush to improve lymph flow. Find a dry body brush here.
- Don’t cross your legs when you sit. Crossing your legs can put unwanted pressure against your veins.
- Sit with your feet elevated occasionally. One of the reasons we get varicose veins is because the veins are working so hard to fight gravity.
- Eat anti-inflammatory foods including turmeric, ginger, blueberries, olive oil, broccoli, and kale. Inflammation reduces blood flow. Reduced blood flow leads to blood clots. Blood clots result in varicose veins.
Which Essential Oils to Use
Here is a list of essential oils that promote circulation and blood movement. They strengthen the capillary walls in your blood vessels (weak vessels is a cause of varicose veins). Lucky for me, a lot of these oils have either a citrus or earthy smell, 2 of my favs! I highly recommend Young Living Therapeutic Essential Oils. You can buy them here.
- Basil
- Cypress (very effective)
- Fennel
- Geranium
- Grapefruit
- Helichrysum (This is one of the more expensive essential oils. But it is worth it’s weight in gold. It attacks the coagulated blood inside the veins when applied topically on your skin. Amazing stuff.)
- Juniper Berry
- Lemon (very effective)
- Lime
- Orange
- Rosemary
In addition, here is a list of some of the oils that support healthy joint and cartilage function that is often needed in addition with healthy circulation. You can add 5-10 drops of one of the following oils to your recipe:
Varicose Vein Attacking Body Butter – How to Get Rid of Varicose Veins Naturally
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup shea butter (organic, raw, and unrefined like this one)
- 1/4 cup coconut oil (organic and cold pressed like this one)
- 1/4 cup jojoba oil (organic, cold press, and unrefined like this one)
- 1 tablespoon vitamin E liquid (like this one)
- 30 drops of essential oils from the above list (my favorite combo is 10 drops of cypress, 10 drops of lemon, 5 drops of fennel, and 5 drops helichrysum)
Directions:
- Heat shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler on medium low. Stir until the oils melt, just a few minutes.
- Remove from heat.
- Add the jojoba oil, vitamin E liquid, and essential oils.
- Refrigerate for about an hour or 2 until chilled. You will have an off-white, almost solid (not quite completely solid).
- Mix with a hand mixer for about 10 minutes until you have soft white peaks (like whip cream).
- Store in a glass container. These jars are perfect.
- Massage this towards your heart to encourage blood flow (i.e. start at your ankles and work up your legs; start at your wrists and work up towards your shoulders).
- Your body butter is good for about 6 months. Store at room temperature. During hot weather, the body butter may slightly melt. You can store in the fridge if this happens (or if you just like a cold body butter).
- Note: Just like with dry body brushing, I do not recommend using this body butter at night. These circulation boosting essential oils get your blood flow all worked up and is very stimulating! It can disrupt restful sleep.

I’m a bit skeptical. Do you have any before and after shots?
Or using on one side of a persons legs but not the other?
What a helpful article. I don’t suffer with varicose veins but I have friends who do. I will be sharing this with them.
Thanks Jennifer!
Hi Erin, Sorry, no I did not run any tests like that. I have only used it on myself and it is working.
How many 8oz jars (the ones linked) will this recipe fill?
Thanks!
Kat
Hi Kat! About 1 and a half. It’s a little bit over 8 oz of ingredients in the recipe, and then it’s whipped.
Thanks!
What would you suggest as a substitute for the coconut oil? I have a bad skin reaction to coconut oil.
Replace with another solid oil. You can use more shea butter or cocoa butter.
Does this work for spider veins as well or only varicose veins?
Yep!
Howdy! I could have sworn I’ve been to this web site before
but after going through a few of the articles I realized it’s new
to me. Anyhow, I’m certainly pleased I came across it and I’ll be book-marking it and checking back regularly!
Thanks for the info! Great post:)
I’m surprised you haven’t mentioned lemongrass! I’ve heard great things about it. Also, lemon is quite photosensitive. It’s important to either stay out of the sun or use sunscreen if you use lemon.
You mention Chamomile EO as an anti-inflammatory. Is that German Chamomile or Roman Chamomile?
Good questions! Both are anti-inflammatories. So you can use either.
Are all these oils safe for 2nd & 3rd trimester? If not what would you recommend substituting them for? Thanks! I’m in some serious pain & desperate for relief.
Oh no! The lemon, helichrysum, geranium, grapefruit, lime, and orange are safe during pregnancy. You can also try are panaway and valor for pain. Avoid fennel, basil, juniper, and rosemary. Here is a great article with more information: http://www.thankyourbody.com/essential-oils-pregnancy-nursing/. I hope this helps and you can find some relief.
Thanks! I tried the helichrysum & just coconut oil this morning & had significant pain relief. Now I just need to try it with lemon or orange to cover the smell:-).
Thanks for your help!!
Oh that’s great news!
Hey! Love love love this recipe. Thanks for posting! My first batch came out great. It was perfect. Consistency and all! However I just made a second batch today and it wouldn’t whip. I had it in my kitchen aide (same as last time) and it stayed runny no matter hoe long I let it go. Any thoughts on what I may have done wrong and how I can fix it? Thanks!
The only thing I can think of is to let it chill longer in the fridge.
Hey Ashlee, thanks for your Body Butter recipe! I’ve got some pretty brutal varicose veins. I actually had a vein ablation a couple years ago which helped, but then my third pregnancy totally brought them back! I’m just wondering how much improvement you’ve experienced? Like, 50%? 75%?? I have some of the oils, but would have to invest in the others so I want to do my homework first! Thank you!!
About 60%! I am still seeing improvement, but it’s not going as quickly as when I first started using it, but still improving. And most importantly, new varicose veins are not showing up.
This is great. Thanks for sharing!
Gorgeous body butter!! Just wondering, will it fade spider veins also?
It helped with mine!
Hi Ashlee!
I just made this recipe about a week ago and already love it. Thank you so much for sharing, I have worked in the service industry for years and though I don’t have any “true” varicose veins yet, there’s a couple that are getting to that point and my legs are always in need of help with circulation:)
I do have a question for you, how often do you use it? I have just been using it after a shower, but not every day. Would you recommend using it every day for the best results? Thank you!
Can i replace jojoba oil?
I use it several times a week. Since you are preventative, I don’t think you need to do it everyday (but wouldn’t hurt if you did ;0 )
Yes. Any liquid oil should work (avocado, almond, olive, etc)
Thank you!
I have been using venorid for about a month. So far I have not noticed any improvement in the spider veins. The general redness has not improved either. I will continue to use this for another month to see if it will help. Thank you.
…is it important to make the body butter in terms that the combination of these oil help the healing process as well. Or would it just work as well to use the essential oil in a simple carrier oil (jojoba or almond)? Thank you! Fantastic ideas you promote here.
You are correct. You can use the essential oils in a carrier oil. And I do that sometimes in between body butter batches 😉
I am so excited to try this. Since we are several months out from when these comments were posted, how are your results now? I have ugly varicose veins and also have multiple ablation surgeries. They keep popping up. I am so hopeful that this will work. I am very curious to hear how your progress has been….
Hi Aimee! I’m very pleased with the results! The veins are very close to my natural skin color now. And no new veins have formed. I can still see a few spots from the veins when I am close to my legs, but the color is continuing to fade.
My terrible varicose veins have kept me from enjoying life for too many years. I’m desperate to have relief from the pain as well as the unsightly bulging & twisted veins. Haven’t purchased helichrysum yet as it is so pricy! I’ve been trying lemongrass & cypress. Any thoughts on this combo? I also have a lot of inflammation (fibromyalgia-like condition for years). Any help would be appreciated.
I see great results with cypress! I have not tried lemongrass, but have heard lots of great testimonials with it. I’m sorry to hear you are in pain! I hope the oils are helping. You will see better results with pure, therapeutic grade oils.
I purchased DermalMD serum along with NATURE’S WAY, Horse chestnut Standardized Extract – 90 caps, so I am not sure if it was one more than the other or the combination of the two, but I have seen results. It is amazing, and need to get a bigger jar if they have it.
I love this recipe! I would like to use it as a base recipe for a body lotion and add different essential oils depending on what I am in the mood for…can you leave out the essential oils until later? For example, if I made a batch and put in separate containers so I can add different oils in each, can that be done or do the essential oils have to be added before it is whipped??? Hope that makes sense? Thank you!
Absolutely!
Can you use this on all parts of the body? Like your hands. How long does it take to notice a difference? I know it can take time.
Yes, you can use it anywhere. It took a few weeks for me.
I just started using my butter ,can’t wait to see results.my brother has severe varicose vein and poor circulation the doctors say he might loose his legs,I gave him some butter to use I sure hope this will help him. Thanks for posting your recipe
I have been using venorid for about a month. So far I have not noticed any improvement in the spider veins. The general redness has not improved either. I will continue to use this for another month to see if it will help. Thank you.
Hello, is it ok to just use helichrysum? If so, how much do I need for a single batch? I saw in one post/review that she used 50 drops/8 oz. lotion base and had amazing improvement in just 6 weeks. I’m in my late 20’s and started to develop varicose and spider veins in my mid 20’s probably due to pregnancy and use of birth control pills and my skin is just thin/”see through” which make my veins even more prominent. I was considering sclerotherapy but I was sort of trying to convince myself to choose the more natural way of healing it and then I saw your post so I’m going to try this first and see what happens. Thank you!
Yes. You can use any combo from the listed oils or just use one oil. I use a total of 30 drops for this recipe.
Has it helped with the bludging of the veins, mine keep keep getting worse and I want something that really helps. Any before and afters?
It has helped with my bulging veins. I had a pretty big patch of them after my surgery. I got them down considerably using the body butter. I’m pregnant now so they have come back a little so I’m using the body butter again. I don’t have before and after pictures.
If I use a carrier oil, then how much of the carrier oil and do I use the same number of drops as for the butter?
Thank you, can’t wait to try it!
I have not tried that. But in about a cup of carrier oil, it should be about the same, 30 drops of essential oils.
Thank you!!
The issue of varicose veins issue is not very serious, but it is better to prevent it. varicose veins during pregnancy is common issue. Some tips to prevent varicose veins – do not stand for longer period, avoid constipation, regular exercise, sleep on the left side, avoid carrying too much weight.
I wish I saw this a few months ago!!! I am almost done with my pregnancy (today is my due date, actually!), and I have varicose veins all the way down one of my legs now! I’ll try to whip a batch of this up soon and see if it’ll help! Thank you!
Congratulations mama!! Hope this helps 😉
I’m also skeptical, but I’ve been reading about quite a few essential oil spider vein treatments of late. I use vitamin K cream and it makes a difference (for spider veins), so this is worth a shot. If it does work, it would be a lot less expensive.
Wow, This cream is very helpful for skin care.
Hi Crunchy Moose, Thanks for sharing new ideas .
Alova Vera gel would also be good to incorporate into this recipe. I was recently reading that it helps with varicose veins too.
I have been planing to make some. I’m just starting to see the beings and want to stop it before it gets bad. Thanks for the recipe and tips.
how many times a day do you put on the body butter along with oils for the varicose and spider veins?
Hey , I just got all the ingredients to make this body butter , I am 30 years old a have bad varicose veins, spider veins, red patches on my feet, , I got pregnant 4 years ago and they became this way..Don’t have the money for surgery. I am hoping this helps. I am going to take before and after photos. Thanks for the recipe..
Thanks for this recipe . I have bad varicose veins and usually when I am on my feet all day my legs hurt. I started using this yesterday and my legs already feel great. Thank you so much. 🙂
Awesome!
Awesome! Hope it helps 😉
I used it twice a day.
Well, I have to say, venorid serum does work. I bought the products and yes after the first week there was not much change to be noted. I did however notice a change after the second week as my spider veins started to disappear.
Hi! Will it be just as effective without the helichrysum? Or is there something you can use in place of it? It’s just so terribly expensive!
I haven’t found anything that works as well as helichrysum for me.
Hey Ashlee,
A pounded cabbage poultice will aid in lowering vein colds and inflammations sipping as well unnecessary uric and fatty deposits in vein and tissues.
Thanks for sharing!
Cynthia
I tried the venorid serum for several weeks but found out it didn’t work.
thanks for the recipe,
I would definitely give it a try and will also suggest the product to my friends. I guess using it with with some other lotion will be a great idea. One can really benefit from the ingredient rich massage.
This looks like a good recipe. My sister has bad varicosities and I am going to make some for her. Why do you need to whip it after cooling? Just wondering.
I don’t have varicose veins but I have then swollen ankles with some pain. Would this cream help prevent that.
Thank you.
Elizabeth
I would think so.
I just whipped up a batch and I can’t believe how fluffy and light it is! I hope it works. Trying to avoid surgery.
I was looking into buying some Marjoram do you know if there is a difference between Marjoram and Sweet Marjoram?
i had my lady(all hand-made natural products) make some up for me..how oten a day should i apply??..i have been doing 2x..morning and afternoon….thx..
After having my baby, my legs just looked absolutely awful, venorid serum really helped just in time for summer shorts and dresses too. It took a couple of weeks before I noticed a difference, but it was definitely worth the wait. I feel way happier about my legs now.
Hi there! I am a new ”customer” to this treatment and I do believe nature has the answers. I am curious how do you feel? Any improvements? What do you think about castor oil? What about the diet? Did you came across any treatments/oils that you have not wrote about? Thanks
I still use this recipe and it still works great for me!
twice a day is great
I assume it’s just a different variety. I only use Young Living essential oils and they don’t have the sweet marjoram variety.
Which helichrysum oil do you prefer?
I just made a batch and whipped it but doesn’t look very fluffy. When I applied it it became oily. Is that normal? Do you just wait for it to absorb into skin?
Will this work on broken capillaries?
Thanks for your information.
Annie
Hi, what safe oils do you recommend to use for when your pregnant please? And the most potent. I’ve always suffered with thread veins but since being pregnant on the leg I’ve had an injury on the veins in the area are swollen sore dark in colour and very hot and now stick out unlike before. I’m hoping after pregnancy this will go.im having to wear a support tight. Also does it help thread veins disappear? They make me miserable and Surgery is so expensive. Many many thanks in advance for your help!!! Kind regards Carol 🙂
Hi Carol – Here’s a great article on pregnancy and essential oils http://www.thankyourbody.com/essential-oils-pregnancy-nursing/. Helichyrsum is what worked best for me.
I don’t have personal testimonies with broken capillaries. I have heard from people that cypress helps and supports circulation.
hmmmm….I’m not sure what happened. Mine is always fluffy and it is absorbed into the skin without any oily residue.
I use Young Living helichyrsum.
Can I share this recipe with my oil friends? 🙂
Of course! Thank you!
Using the cream for 2 weeks and veins appear a little worse than before….did you have this same experience? Did they appear worse at first before getting better?
Hi Christine,
How is your brother doing? I have very poor circulation and edema and I would like to know if it is helping?
How does that work and how do you make it?
How much does it cost to make this
This is so helpful! So informative! (also I am in LOVE with edens gardens essential oils, they’re so affordable it’s ridiculous!)
What’s the ingredients I’m confused
Many Thanks for that and sorry for the very late reply..I will definately give this a go, if it works it’s a life safer..Thank You!!! 🙂
oh no! No – that didn’t happen with me. I hope it’s getting better.
Where i can. Get this oil
Ingredients
1/2 cup shea butter (organic, raw, and unrefined like this one)
1/4 cup coconut oil (organic and cold pressed like this one)
1/4 cup jojoba oil (organic, cold press, and unrefined like this one)
1 tablespoon vitamin E liquid ( like this one)
30 drops of essential oils from the above list (my favorite combo is 10 drops of cypress, 10 drops of lemon, 5 drops of fennel, and 5 drops helichrysum)
The 30 oils from above list:

Juniper Berry
Lemon (very effective)
Lime
Orange
Rosemary
In addition, here is a list of some of the oils that address inflammation. Inflammation often occurs with varicose veins. If you have inflammation (swollen ankles, etc. or pain resulting from inflammation) along with your varicose veins, add 1 or 2 of the following oils to your recipe:
Chamomile
Eucalyptus
Lavender
Marjoram
Peppermint
Would it be effective at all if I were to add the essential oils to my sunless self tanner? Or is it more the combination of the other ingredients mentioned that make it possible to achieve positive results? Thanks!
I’m the same! Early twenties I started to develop varicose veins.. Ugh. I’m just starting to get into essential oils so I will be taking before and after pictures of my progress with the Cypress oil. Has it been working for you? I see these comments are from over a year ago so it’d be nice to hear some positive feedback from others who’ve tried the essential oils and this body butter! 🙂
Possibly. There is a possibility that the ingredients in your tanner could interact with the essential oils – in a good or bad way.
I finally gathered all my ingredients to make this body butter. My only problem is I can’t keep the coconut oil from being a liquid (I live in south Texas). Should I pull out the 1/4 cup coconut oil an put it in the fridge so that it’s hard before I start mixing my body butter? Or is it ok to just go ahead and mix it as a liquid. I want to be sure to do it right since the Helichrysm cost such a pretty penny. Thanks so much!
The 1st step is to melt the coconut oil, so you can use it as is.
