I love a good DIY beauty mask. And when it can do double duty on my hair and face ... swoon! This bentonite clay face and hair mask is my most used mask recipe.
What is Bentonite Clay?
- Bentonite clay comes from volcanic ash that is rich in naturally occurring minerals with a natural negative electric charge. This electric charge attracts and draws out toxins, metals, & other impurities, resulting in an effective, gentle, & healing detox.
- This powerful, natural substance provides numerous benefits including:
- Detoxifying and purifying pores
- Reducing excess oil and shine
- Soothing irritation or redness
- Improving skin texture and clarity

Why Apple Cider Vinegar?
- Your skin and hair has a pH level of about 5.
- Bentonite clay has a pH level of about 9.
- Apple cider vinegar has a pH level of about 3.
- So mixing apple cider vinegar with bentonite clay creates a pH balanced mask.

Directions:
- NOTE: It's important to not use metal bowls or utensils. Metal can altar or neutralize the natural electric charge in your clay.
- In a non-metal bowl, mix:
- 1 - 3 tablespoons bentonite clay
- 1 - 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- Adjust the amount of clay and vinegar to make the desired amount for your face and hair. Just be sure to keep a 1:1 ratio. I used 3 tablespoons of each in the video for my face and hair.
- 5-10 drops essential oils of choice
- Optional: 1 teaspoon honey for extra moisturizing
- Mix with a non-metal spoon
- It will be fizzy while your mix as the clay is activated
- Apply to a thin layer to your face and damp hair & scalp
- This can be a messy process. Embrace it and have fun!
- Allow to dry for about 15 minutes then wash off
- Notes for your skin:
- Your face may feel a little tingly. That's the clay's magic power!
- Your face may be a little red when you first wash off the mask. It will calm down quickly and be silky smooth!
- Notes for your hair:
- Don't allow the mask to completely harden or dry on your hair. It can be hard to remove and drying if left on too long.
- It's easiest to remove the mask from your hair under running shower water.
- You can follow with shampoo and/or conditioner if needed or desired. The clay can be drying so if your hair feels dry, follow up with conditioner or moisturizing serum (I like argan oil).
