Making homemade lip balm is super easy, super inexpensive, and super fun! You can customize the flavors, add tint, make it plumping, and they make great gifts. My DIY lip balms and DIY melt & pour soap are always a crowd favorite when I gift them.

DIY Lip Balm Ingredients
I love choose-your-own-adventure recipes and this is one of them! Here is a list of ingredients you can use in your lip balm with their benefits. Keep scrolling to get my favorite recipes.
Beeswax
- forms a protective layer on the skin, locking in moisture and preventing dryness
- helps soothe and calm irritated lips, making it ideal for chapped or cracked skin
- creates a natural barrier that shields the lips from harsh environmental conditions, such as wind and cold weather
- rich in Vitamin A, which supports skin cell regeneration
- solidifies your lip balm
- NOTE: for a vegan lip balm, use candelilla or carnauba wax
- NOTE: I prefer to use beeswax pellets. You can also use solid beeswax and grate it so it's easier to measure and work with.
Skin Butters: Shea, Mango, Cocoa
- hydrating, soothing, and softening for your lips and skin
- contains vitamins A, C, & E and antioxidants
- hardens your lip balm while also softening the beeswax so it glides smooth on your lips
- TIP: grate your skin butter of choice to make it easier to measure and work with
Carrier Oils: Coconut, Almond, Castor, Olive, Jojoba, Avocado, Grapeseed, Argan, etc
- you can choose your favorite carrier oil
- carrier oils have fatty acids. vitamins, and antioxidants your lips love

Base Recipe for DIY Lip Balm
Homemade lip balm is an easy ratio recipe.
- 2 parts beeswax
- 2 parts skin butter of choice (Shea, Mango, Cocoa)
- 1 part carrier oil of choice (Coconut, Almond, Castor, Olive, Jojoba, Avocado, Grapeseed, Argan, etc)
- Up to 1 part add-ins
- You can mix & match add-ins of choice including honey, aloe vera, essential oils, tint, lip plumper
To make about 2 oz of lip balm, which makes about 8 lip balm tubes or four 1/2 oz tins:
- 2 tablespoons beeswax
- 2 tablespoons skin butter of choice
- 1 tablespoon carrier oil of choice
- Up to 1 tablespoon combined of optional add-ins
- use up to 1 teaspoon of tint of choice
- up to 20 drops of essential oils of choice
- up to 1 teaspoon of cinnamon or cayenne powder
DIY Lip Balm: 5 Ways
Tools Needed:
- Double boiler
- Lip balm tubes or tins
- A dropper or funnel makes it easier to fill the tubes
Mint Chocolate Lip Balm
- Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons beeswax
- 2 tablespoons cocoa butter
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 15 drops peppermint essential oil
- 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
- Directions:
- Add beeswax, cocoa butter, and coconut oil into a double boiler on the stove on low until melted
- Remove from heat and add the essential oil and cocoa powder
- Pour into tubes or tins and let set for at least an hour
Coconut Lime Lip Balm
- Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons beeswax
- 2 tablespoons mango butter
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 15 drops lime essential oil
- Optional: add 5 drops vanilla essential oil
- 1 teaspoon aloe vera (fresh or bottled)
- Directions:
- Add beeswax, mango butter, and coconut oil into a double boiler on the stove on low until melted
- Remove from heat and add the essential oil and aloe vera
- Pour into tubes or tins and let set for at least an hour
Lip Plumping Tinted Lip Balm
- Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons beeswax
- 2 tablespoons shea butter
- 1 tablespoon castor oil
- 10 drops peppermint essential oil
- 5 drops cinnamon essential oil
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder
- 1 teaspoon mica powder in color of choice or other tint of choice
- Directions:
- Add beeswax, shea butter, and castor oil into a double boiler on the stove on low until melted
- Remove from heat and add the essential oils, cinnamon powder, and mica or other tint
- Pour into tubes or tins and let set for at least an hour
Moisturizing Lavender Lip Balm
- Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons beeswax
- 2 tablespoons shea butter
- 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
- 20 drops lavender essential oil
- 1/2 teaspoon vitamin E
- 1 teaspoon aloe vera (fresh or bottled)
- Directions:
- Add beeswax, shea butter, and jojoba oil into a double boiler on the stove on low until melted
- Remove from heat and add the essential oil, vitamin E, and aloe vera
- Pour into tubes or tins and let set for at least an hour
Soothing Honey Lip Balm
- Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons beeswax
- 2 tablespoons shea butter
- 1 tablespoon argan oil
- 10 drops frankincense essential oil
- 10 drops tea tree essential oil
- 1/2 teaspoon vitamin E
- 1 teaspoon honey
- Directions:
- Add beeswax, shea butter, and argan oil into a double boiler on the stove on low until melted
- Remove from heat and add the essential oil, vitamin E, and honey
