Homemade Deodorant Recipe
This is hands down the best deodorant I have ever used. I started using it last fall. It even works well in hot Texas summers. DIY nontoxic homemade deodorant with coconut oil. It works!
Before I found this, I tried pretty much every natural commercial product (the crystal stick, natural brands like this, and sprays like this) . Everything made me breakout. Then I tried this. And I broke out in a rash again. Since I knew exactly what was in the homemade recipe, I started googling. Turns out it is pretty common to detox after years (about 20 years for me) of using commercial deodorant full of metals and other toxins. Which is just gross. So I had a few weeks of uncomfortable rashes. So if you are breaking out because of your natural deodorant, you could be detoxing.
Mix:
- 1/2 cup coconut oil (if your coconut oil is solid, heat in on low on the stove until it melts)
- 1.5 tsp arrowroot
- 1.5 tsp corn starch
- 1.5 tsp baking soda (get a good quality)
- 5-10 drops Young Living Essential Oils; optional (I use sage and tea tree)
You can adjust the ratios. I have seen this recipe with a lot less coconut oil and more of the powders. These ratios will have a lotion consistency.

After years of breakouts from harsh commercial deodorants I am so happy to find this recipe for DIY deodorant. I have been using Thai Crystal successfully as well for this purpose. BTW I found your post on “Thank Your Body’s Link Up”.
Thanks for stopping by! I started with the crystals and it didn’t work for me. I know quite a few people that love them, they are a great option.
I just mixed up a batch and I’m putting myself on a 30 day trial. How long did your rash hang around? I had that happen before but I was using coconut oil and dabbing on baking soda, so I thought it was too much baking soda. Glad to know it might just be detox!
The rash took almost a month to completely heal. And I did cut down the amount of baking soda during that time since it’s a little abrasive. Hope you heal quickly!
Does the coconut oil stain clothing at all? I cook with it and it has stained my clothing in the past. Thanks!
I don’t haven’t had any problems with that
