Traditional home remedies often prove most effective for my family, and these homemade throat soothers are a prime example.
Many DIY cough drops and throat lozenges recipes are overly complicated—I'm not keen on using a candy thermometer just to ease a sore throat. And when searching for no-cook alternatives, I found that most relied on a coconut oil base and required refrigeration. I personally don't think that carrying a ball of coconut oil in my purse is a good idea...
So I decided to create a no-cook, purse-friendly throat soother that truly works! Fully loaded with vitamin C, honey, ginger, and essential oils.
The Perfect Homemade Throat Soother
To make the perfect homemade throat soother, you need active ingredients, sweetener, and natural flavors.
Active Ingredients:
- There are a lot of herbs and natural ingredients you can add to your recipe. If you have a favorite herb with respiratory benefits, you can add it or substitute it in the recipe. I'm using the following:
- Sodium Ascorbate Powder (Vitamin C)
- Sodium Ascorbate is vitamin C combined with minerals. It is less acidic than the ascorbic acid form of Vitamin C, so gentler on the stomach with a milder taste.
- Boosts immune system function
- Mixes well with honey or herbal powders in no-cook recipes
- Rich in mucilage — forms a soothing gel for the throat
- Reduces inflammation and irritation in the throat and digestive tract
- Helps calm dry coughs and sore throats
- Natural anti-inflammatory and antiviral
- Helps break up mucus and improve circulation
- Warms the body and soothes nausea
- Can reduce throat discomfort and mild pain
- NOTE: You definitely get more health benefits from fresh ginger versus ground ginger. However, fresh ginger will alter the consistency of your soothers. I prefer to use ground ginger because it's easier to use in this no cook recipe. You can also add Ginger Vitality Essential Oils as your essential oil of choice.
- Sodium Ascorbate Powder (Vitamin C)
- There are a lot of herbs and natural ingredients you can add to your recipe. If you have a favorite herb with respiratory benefits, you can add it or substitute it in the recipe. I'm using the following:
A sweetener: Honey
- Honey is the clear winner because of it's many health benefits:
- Natural cough suppressant and throat soother
- Antibacterial and antimicrobial properties
- Helps coat the throat, reducing irritation
- Contains small amounts of vitamins, enzymes, and antioxidants
- Maple Syrup can be used for a vegan version
- Honey is the clear winner because of it's many health benefits:
Flavors & Essential Oils
- You can use your favorite flavor of essential oils to add flavor and herbal benefits. My favorites are:
- Lemon Vitality
- Peppermint Vitality
- Thieves Vitality (my family's favorite!)
- Ginger Vitality

- You can add additional healing herbs that provide respiratory support and/or a flavor you like. Just be sure to adjust the honey to account for the extra dried ingredients so you get the desired consistency.
- You can use your favorite flavor of essential oils to add flavor and herbal benefits. My favorites are:
An Anti-Sticking Agent: Powdered Sugar or Corn Starch
- After you shape your throat soothers, coat them with powdered sugar or corn starch to keep them from sticking together
- You can sub with an herbal powder of choice
- If you like sour, you can also use the Sodium Ascorbate Powder as a dusting powder
Easy No-Cook Throat Soothers Recipe
You can adjust the ratio of slippery elm powder to honey to get your preferred consistency.
- More honey will be a result in a softer, more taffy-like texture.
- You can use as much as a 1:1 ratio of slippery elm powder to honey.
- More slippery elm powder will result in a firmer texture
- A ration of about 3-4:1 slippery elm powder to honey will give you a longer-lasting soother that you're more likely to suck on than chew.
- Either way, the ingredients in the throat soother will coat your throat and provide healing properties.
- This recipe will not provide a hard or crunchy cough drop.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup slippery elm powder
- 1 tsp sodium ascorbate powder
- 1 tsp ground ginger (use less or omit for a kid-friendly version)
- raw honey (or maple syrup for vegan version)
- 5-10 drops essential oil of choice
- Lemon, Peppermint, Thieves, or Ginger Vitality
- Order here and use code SHAREYL
- Use less for a kid-friendly version or milder flavor
- Lemon, Peppermint, Thieves, or Ginger Vitality
- Powdered sugar or corn starch for dusting
- can sub with your favorite herbal powder
- Optional: unbleached parchment paper or wax paper to individually wrap
Directions:
- Mix dry ingredients:
- In a bowl, combine slippery elm, ground ginger, and sodium ascorbate
- Stir in the honey
- For firmer soothers, you want a thick, pliable dough consistency
- For softer chews, you want a taffy-like consistency
- Stir in essential oils of choice
- Roll into marble-sized balls and slightly flatten to make a disc shape
- Tip: dust your hands with powdered sugar or corn starch or grease your hands with a little coconut oil or olive oil to keep the honey mixture from sticking to your hands while you shape your throat soothers
- Coat with dusting powder (powdered sugar or corn starch)
- Lay in single layer without touching on unbleached parchment paper or wax paper
- Air dry for 24-48 hours; flip halfway through for even hardening & drying
- Optional: wrap in small squares of unbleached parchment paper or wax paper
- I find the easiest way is to cut the parchment paper into strips and simply fold the strips in half over the throat soother. You can also wrap them like a candy by twisting the ends of the parchment paper.
- Store in an airtight container
- Lasts 2-3 weeks, or longer refrigerated
- Makes 20-30 throat soothers
