Making essential oil capsules is super easy, provides targeted support, and allows you to control the dosage amount of the essential oils you use. I make capsules multiple times a week for my family and they were a pivotal part of my recovery from 3 years of spine surgeries.
Is It Safe to Ingest Essential Oils?
This is very controversial and you'll find extreme answers on both sides of the argument.
Always go to your comfort level. If you aren't comfortable ingesting essential oils, no worries! Keep using them topically and in your diffuser and you'll still get lots of benefits!
Personally, my family and I have had amazing results with essential oil capsules. Here are some safety guidelines to follow:
- Quality matters
- Only use essential oils that are labeled as safe for internal use.
- The vitality essential oils with the white labels are labeled for supplement use. The essential oils with the colored labels are labeled for topical use. They have the same essential oil inside the bottle -- just a different label!
- Look for oils that are free of additives and tested for purity.
- Choose oils from reputable brands that provide transparency about their sourcing, production processes, and testing standards.
- I only use Young Living because they pass all these tests.
- Only use essential oils that are labeled as safe for internal use.
- Proper Dilution
- Essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be diluted before ingestion.
- Using a carrier oil, such as olive oil, coconut oil, or avocado oil, helps to safely dilute the essential oil.
- A little goes a long way. More is not better.
- Follow recommended guidelines for dilution.
- Consult with a Professional
- As always, consult with a healthcare professional, such as a doctor, naturopath, or certified aromatherapist.
- If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition, consult a health professional prior to use.
- Start Slowly
- Begin with small doses to see how your body reacts. Gradually increase the dosage if needed, always within the recommended limits.
Supplies for Essential Oil Capsules
- Empty capsules. I like the 00 size.
- Dropper tops for your essential oil bottles make it easier to fill the capsules.
- Carrier oil that is safe for ingesting like olive oil, coconut oil, or avocado oil.
- Vitality essential oils labeled for internal use.
- Here are my favorites. See recipes below.

How to Make Essential Oil Capsules
Tips
- If you make essential oil capsules in bulk, be sure to store them in the freezer so the essential oils don't dissolve the capsules.
- Don't take the capsules on an empty stomach.
- Essential oils float on top of water. So essential oils will tend to sit on top of your stomach. If you "taste" the oils after taking a pill, you can eat something absorbent like a piece of bread to soak up the essential oils and be processed through your body.
