Coffee is a controversial topic. One week I read an article on why it’s the worst thing you could ever consume, and the headline the next week says to drink all the coffee in my house immediately. Dr. Oz says to drink it, Weston Price says to chunk it. So which is it? Well, if you like your morning cup of joe, you should keep reading. Because I am a coffee supporter and drink it almost everyday. Here are the top health benefits of coffee.
1. Coffee is full of antioxidants
Eating your antioxidants is one of my favorite ways to keep wrinkles far, far away. And coffee is full of antioxidants (source). One or two cups of coffee a day provides enough antioxidants to be beneficial.
2. Enhance Memory and Brain Function
Yep, you read that right. Coffee can improve your memory. This study indicates that caffeine enhances short term memory. Caffeine enters your bloodstream and is then delivered to your brain. The caffeine blocks production of adenosine (an inhibitory neurotransmitter) and stimulates dopamine production (source). This article is a collection os 23 studies. Here’s a sampling of the results:
- “Improvements in reaction time, vigilance, memory. Habitual users outperformed non-users”
- “Caffeine improved cognitive function at all doses. Regular caffeine users benefited more than low users”
- “Performance and mood improvements”
There is inconsistency with the studies if habitual use of caffeine had greater effects than single use. But overall, the studies listed show improvements in memory, alertness, mood, and performance.
3. Coffee is a Fat Burner
Next time you are in a health food store, browse through the fat burning supplements and look at the labels (by the way, I do not recommend any of these supplements). Everyone of them will contain caffeine. Caffeine increases your metabolism and body temperature, which results in more fat burning!
4. Coffee Reduces Your Risk of Cancer, Stroke, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Diabetes
Crazy, right?! Study after study shows this (here are a few 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10). The exact reason is not known. It could be the antioxidants. It could be the potassium and magnesium (yep, that’s in coffee!). It could be the caffeine. It could be the increased amount of dopamine. It could be a combination of several things. I don’t see any need to question coffee’s magical powers. Accept it and enjoy your brew!
